Defrocked, Part II

Some of you read yesterday at Francis Mooney's site that the Rev. David Moyer was defrocked. Today's Philadelphia Inquirer had this story about a peculiar twist in the developments.

As one of the few Episcopal churches in the Philadelphia area which still believes the Gospel, i join with Francis Mooney in asking you to pray for the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rosemont.

Providence

It was a joy to visit Providence, Rhode Island earlier this week and walk its streets. The city is home to Brown University, as well as other schools. But Brown has a motto on its crest which reads In Deo Speramus. Since my Latin is rusty, i consulted with Francis Mooney, who set me on the right path. The right translation of In Deo Speramus is In God We Hope.

A great motto, for certain, yet one which i dare say is not the guiding principle of the school any longer. As Francis Mooney pointed out, so many schools have started on the same track as Brown only to depart from those beginings and blithely refer to such foundations as faith traditions which are no longer relevant to the modern orientation of the school.

A visit to this part of the Brown web site discusses the school's origin, but seems to chose its words carefully enough to avoid too much of an association with the stark expression of In Deo Speramus.
